My favouritest-ever English teacher gave me 'The Flight of the Heron' when I was 13 or so, and I'd certainly recommend it. Jacobites! Hurt/comfort! Duels! Friendship beyond all reason! She wrote a couple of sequels to it as well, and some other stuff, but goodness knows if anything is still in print.
