Chocolate Cake
So I finally managed to pin Mum down on the chocolate cake recipe I brought to the film marathon and I thought I might as well put it here.
Mum's Chocolate Cake
4ozs Margarine
3ozs Sugar
1Tbsp Cocoa
1 Cup Raisins
1 Egg
8ozs Digestive Biscuits (Crushed to crumbs – a potato masher works really well)
4oz Cooking Chocolate (to cover)
Cooking equipment needed
Large saucepan
Swiss roll tin
Melt margarine in saucepan on a low heat, then add sugar. Wait until it dissolves, then add the cocoa and raisins. Allow to boil for about a minute, until the cocoa thickens.
Remove from heat and allow to cool for about 20-30mins.
Then add the egg, making sure the mixture is cool enough to prevent the white from solidifying. Stir the mixture throughly.
Add the biscuits, stirring until completely mixed in. The mixture should have a thick but still spreadable consistency.
Spread the mixture out evenly in the swiss roll tin. Leave to set.
Melt the chocolate (in microwave or over boiling water) and spread evenly over the cake. When the chocolate in nearly set, mark cutting lines in squares. (So chocolate doesn't crack when finally cut.)
Besides it gives me a chance to show off my new Eowyn icon - Daniel is lovely, but it is nice to have a change, particularly when being around Tolkien people.

Now, dare we risk the kitchen to have a go at it, or do we print out the recipe and hand to the other half? Given that I have no idea what a swiss roll tin or a potato masher look like, I think I'll go with the latter...

Swiss Roll Tin - Very shallow metal baking tin - about 40cm by 25cm - from what I remember from Home Economics at school, for a Swiss Roll you cook the sponge out flat and then roll it up afterwards.
Potato masher - You might have one if you have one of those sets of kitchen tools, - ladle, slotted spoon etc. It should have a flat base and a straight up and down handle. Otherwise, you could use a rolling pin on the biscuits in a bag.
In any case, it's a great job to pass to your unskilled assistant - I've been bashing biscuits for Mum since I was at junior school. It's also a useful way of working out your frustrations, if you feel as much like ranting as you did the last time we met - and you get chocolate out of it.

Have asked the other half if we own a swiss roll tin, to which he expressed astonishment that I was even interested, and then said no. Visit to John Lewis might be in order - it is all in the name of chocolate, after all...

Hullo. I'm the girl who arrived late and promptly stuffed her face. Then got a tinsy bit tipsy. Then talked throughout the movie. And then laughed at Elanor crying on my shoulder. Because I am evil. Har har.

I should have realised making the chocolate cake was the beginning of a slippery slope - as I was saying to elanor, everyone will be thinking I can cook.
Do you think you might make it to Tolkien 2005? - I was certainly intending to make some for a room party there - otherwise you might have to rely on elanor.

You can cook brownies, if nothing else. And really, that's all that matters!
Ummm, depends when it is. And where it is. And how much it is. And whether I can scab a lift off Elanor. But maybe.
