When I was at Index, they were encouraging people to do NVQs in customer service - which is at least transferable, though not something I would have said you could learn from a book. NVQs in the job you're already doing seems pretty ridiculous.
I must admit some of it is just that I enjoy learning new things, but apart from the spreadsheets - which is quite fun, like logic puzzles - most of it has been fairly basic.
