I used to autohide the panel/task bar but I use a lot of features in Firefox which are on the status bar at the bottom of the the window. I found that the panel would keep popping up and getting in the way, so I decided to keep it there all the time.
The docks on LMDE and Bodhi go underneath the current windows, so I still have a fair amount of screen to play with.
