I'm afraid I'm a greedy fanfic reader, so I've tended to move on to active fandoms that can keep up with me. ;-)
On the other hand, I've tended to find that I drop out of fandoms because the canon doesn't go where I expect/want it to, which is much less of a problem in closed canons. You've probably found a more sensible way of doing things.
