Let It Snow...

We had some snow overnight here, a little dusting to wet a hobbit's toes. At about 12 noon though, it started snowing again and it hasn't stopped. Mum left to take her elderly friend home over an hour ago, and we've just had a phone call to say that she's got the car stuck, so she's walking home. (It's probably only about a mile, but I sure it's not fun being out in it.)

The snow's beautiful, but I'm sure it's much prettier when viewed from the inside of a nice, warm room. Hope your mother makes it back with as little hassle as possible!

Yes, absolutely.

Mum made it home in one piece, thank goodness. She managed to drive in the end, but there are lots of hills between here and there. Not big hills, most of the time you would barely notice them, but with ungritted roads and lots of snow, suddenly you have to be very careful not to lose control part of the way up.

We've obviously had far more snow here. It was about 4 inches first thing and, after snowing all day, is about 8 inches deep now.

Glad your mum made it home OK

Yes, we only had an inch or so first thing, though places like the drive where it didn't melt have about 5-6 inches now.

Thanks. :-) She grew up a country girl (near Stroud) and these things just don't seem to phase her, even though she'll be 70 in 2 weeks. I'm definitely a soft townie by comparison.

Well, I went through The Big Freeze of 1963 on the edge of Dartmoor (though I don't really remember that) and I had a lowest temperature of -14C during the year abroad of my degree in Normandy (plus I had a few 'interesting' experiences in the Pennines during my university career), so I have had worse, but what we have had this month is quite bad enough, thank you!

Mum was in Bristol in 1963, so we grew up hearing the stories. This may not be in that league...yet, but as you say, it's quite bad enough. And worse for you guys in the South East than us.

It's pretty slippery here as well - when Mum was driving home yesterday, she said it was the slipperiest that she ever known it be on the roads, and somebody from work posted on Facebook that his mother had fallen and broken her wrist.

We haven't had any more snow, it's just sitting there looking pretty, but we don't need to go out today. Tomorrow will be much more of struggle.
