Not a good week

I know a lot of you have been having a bad time and I'm sorry if I haven't been able to comment on all your posts individually. *hugs to everyone*
Here, Mum is not having a good week. She's suffered from sciatica from time to time over many years, and it flared up again a month or so ago. She tried to keep going, with painkillers to control the worst of the symptoms, and the chiropractor was able to help a bit, but it wasn't getting any better.
to the extent that I came home from work on Thursday to find that she had rung the doctor, who'd prescribed much stronger painkillers. She was almost crying with the pain, which is a big deal when it comes to someone as stoic as Mum, and couldn't get comfortable anywhere, even lying flat on her back, which had always helped before. It had hit a vicious circle, where the pain made her tense up, and the tension made the pain worse.
Fortunately, the codeine in the new painkillers was enough to let her sleep, which broke that cycle, but she's still in bed, and while she's reasonably comfortable at the moment, getting up and standing starts some discomfort again, even with the painkillers.
She's already seen her GP and has a referral to a back specialist, but in the meantime any good thoughts and prayers you have would be very much appreciated.

Date: 2011-04-02 02:07 pm (UTC)It's probably good for her to have the rest and let other people do stuff for her for a change, but I wish it didn't have to be this bad to make that happen. :-(

Date: 2011-04-04 12:39 am (UTC)My own Mum is having a bit of an awful year too: she injured her back, then her shoulder, then her lower arm (all in separate incidents) and a few days ago had a fall that bruised her leg and brought on an angina attack! Still, she is back out of hospital now and sounded much more cheerful when I spoke to her on the 'phone last night...

Date: 2011-04-04 10:28 pm (UTC)The combination of the pills and bed rest are pretty much eliminating the pain at the moment, but we're trying to make sure she doesn't make it worse again by trying to do too much (her standard response ;-D).

Date: 2011-04-05 09:03 pm (UTC)We'll have to see exactly what the back specialist can do - it depends what the cause is.
