[livejournal.com profile] magog_83 made up a meme for her flist, and I thought it was worth stealing, because I'm naturally nosey. Those of you who don't read fanfic, feel free to ignore the related questions, or adapt them.

1. What does your username mean, or why did you choose it?:
2. What’s the oldest thing you own?
3. What was the first Merlin/your main fandom fic you remember reading?
4. Do you have a comfort blanket fic?
5. You’re offered any job you want on Merlin/your favourite show, what job do you take and why?
6. If you were a Mary Sue, or Gary Stu, what super special traits would you have?
7. If you could be a character in any book, tv or film universe, who would you be and why? (can be existing character or made up)
8. The TARDIS materialises in your room and the Doctor offers you a trip, where do you go?

And finally - I think [personal profile] sally_maria should do a poll on...

So you're not the only ones, my answers are under the cut.

1. What does your username mean, or why did you choose it?: It's just my names, which is incredibly boring of me, but I only got my LJ to follow a WIP, it wasn't as if I was going to use it. That was in 2004 - it took me a year or so to learn better.

2. What’s the oldest thing you own? Personally, a ring my Grandma bought at the British Empire Exhibition in 1924, but we also have a lot of Victorian and some older books - I think the oldest is a French/English dictionary from 1815.

3. What was the first Merlin/your main fandom fic you remember reading? Probably something by Astolat - I'm always a fan of her stories, so I would probably have tried something by her in a new fandom that looked vaguely interesting. It was not long before Christmas 2008, because I remember staying up far too late on Christmas Eve reading the merlin_elf stories.

4. Do you have a comfort blanket fic? "I'm Colourblind, Kid" by brbsoulnomming Arthur gets turned into a dog, he and Merlin spend a lot of time together and then humanagain!Arthur and Merlin live happily ever after. :-)

5. You’re offered any job you want on Merlin/your favourite show, what job do you take and why? I've never dreamed of working on a TV show - I've really no idea.

6. If you were a Mary Sue, or Gary Stu, what super special traits would you have? Well, my Mary Sue has a "talent for coincidence" which means she knows people from all sorts of canons, and is forever making them be in crossovers, whether they want to or not. ;-) She's also a cool super-spy, who used to travel in her own TARDIS - after all, if you're a Mary Sue you might as well go the whole hog. She doesn't have purple eyes or ridiculously long hair, though. :-)

7. If you could be a character in any book, tv or film universe, who would you be and why? (can be existing character or made up) Well, if I couldn't be Mary Sue... I think I'd like to be a wizard from Diane Duane's Young Wizards series. I can think of worse tasks than slowing down the death of the Universe, quietly and one little bit at a time.

8. The TARDIS materialises in your room and the Doctor offers you a trip, where do you go? The Pegasus Galaxy - I'd get to visit Atlantis without having to actually join the expedition. :-)

9. The most beautiful place in the world is... Lee Bay in Devon. Sea, cliffs and fields, the perfect English coastline.

10. Name one fic trope you could never get bored of: Oblivious friends, who need pushing to realise they both want to be lovers. (That covers a lot of tropes, actually, from "magic made them do it" to "pretending to be lovers" to "huddling for warmth".)

11. Name one fic trope you never expected to like but did: I'm not sure I have one - I tend to either like tropes or really not like them.

1) It was a running joke about the number of computers I own (as I think I said on LJ a while back)
2) I have some moderately elderly books, but nothing really ancient
5) I think I'd like to act - I like doing readthroughs and the like, so I think if I was working on a TV show, I'd want to act :)
6) The ability to flawlessly predict stochastic events
7) The Doctor? or maybe Giles :)
8) I'd go to 1st century Palestine, and talk to Jesus, I think.
9) Not sure; I have very happy scenery-memories of the Douro valley

  1. The suffix alf to mean wizard or elf, and the prefix alit meaning a-literary - because I still don't really get litcrit.
  2. A pocket watch that you wind with a key.
  3. I don't read fic often - it was probably something NCIS.
  4. No, the nearest I have is one or two of the Honorverse books by David Webber - when I can't read anything else or deal with the world outside my head.
  5. I'd be the next Doctor, of course!
  6. Perfect health, good physical strength, great resistance to injury, and most important intelligent enough to deal with any problem I ever encounter that thought can help with.
  7. Geordie La Forge (if that is spelled right) from Startrek or, maybe, Agatha from Girl Genius.
  8. To the future to get my flying car and Mr Fusion power source, of course. The future we have so far is insufficiently advanced.
  9. Maybe Kynance Cove. There was also a place in the Alps that would be a candidate if I could remember exactly *where*.
  10. Um. Er. Pass.
  11. I don't know. I tend not to notice something is a trope until it gets on my nerves, or I realise that someone has used it to unusually good effect.

1. It's a family nickname. I added an extra n because bun was already taken, but I rather like it now.

2. uuuum I have no idea. I have a few things inherited from grandparents, but no real idea how old they are.

3. can't remember

4. nope

5. Designing aliens, dragons and monsters!

6. Animal handling +10!

7. I'd be minor nobility on Enlad in Earthsea. Minor nobility on the grounds that I'd be rich enough not to have to work for a living, but unimportant enough not to be expected to fight people/dragons

8. Probably the great library of Alexandria just before it burned down, to load up on books before they got burnt. Actually, I might see if I could talk him into visiting some monasteries in Britain in 792AD (just before the Vikings arrive) on the way back. Oh, and just pre-Reformation...
Basically the Tardis would be absolutely groaning with reading matter on the way back.

9. The Gower in springtime is hard to beat.

10. I believe that breaking things up into tropes is dangerously close to breaking a thing to find out what it is. So I'm not going there!

1. In the first issue of White Dwarf magazine I ever bought, in their regular section on miniature painting, was a picture of a goblin miniature with the caption "Yah! Blurt! Zlar! says handsome Philmo Phlegm." I liked the name, but never got around to playing an RPG character called "Philmo Phlegm" until the computer game Baldur's Gate, when it was the name of my Gnome Fighter-Thief.

2. Good question. I have some old stamps and coins, and we have two very old newspapers (framed) that were a wedding present from chris_maslen.

3, 4. Sorry. Don't do "fic".

5. The important person who makes the key creative decisions on the direction of the show, but doesn't have to get his hands dirty with actual production. Like say Steven Moffat for Doctor Who.

6. Nothing immediately obvious, just incredibly, supernaturally lucky.

7. Time Lord accountant.

8. Gallifrey

9. There are probably more beautiful places that I haven't been to, but of the places I've visited, I'm going with a shortlist of Glyn Ceiriog in North Wales, the southern part of the Outer Hebrides and the north-east corner of Iceland.

10, 11 see above.

1. Is a mis-spelling of the Nubian lion-headed god Apedamek.
2. A Late Period (c600BC)small Egyptian pendant in the form of a djed pillar that Gurthaew gave me.
7. Joanna in Barbara Hambly's 'The Windrose Chronicles'.
8. Ancient Egypt, time 18th dynasty, reign of Hatshepsut, Egypt's greatest female ruler.
9. The view from the terrace bar at the Old Cataract Hotel, Aswan, across the Nile to the cliffs beyond with the tombs of the Governors cut in them.
