Things I like

My whole family went to see the Les Miserables film a couple ago and all of us very much enjoyed it, though I was the one who cried the hardest. :-)
A number of scenes and performances from it are online already, but somehow I think they work much better in context. On the other hand, somebody gave me the link to this video, where Hugh Jackman (Valjean) and Russell Crowe (Javert) sing their Confrontation duet at Joe's Pub in New York, and I think it works much better as a standalone performance.
Speaking of things that made me cry, a couple of days ago someone recommended a new Ballet/Sherlock crossover. It sounds like it ought to be completely cracky, and yet it isn't at all.
Proper Genius (Detective Shoes) by Pargoletta "Sherlock and John are summoned to find a missing ballet teacher, and Sherlock recalls the meeting of two extraordinary minds."
Some lovely, but not at all sentimental, snapshots of Sherlock as he grows up, and the interesting relationship he forms with someone who recognises his genius, though hers is in a completely different field.
Another story from a fandom I don't usually read in, though I was a big fan of the show back in the day, is a Babylon 5 piece written for Yuletide.
The Subtle Arrangement of Stones by Nemo_the_Everbeing "Ambassadors Mollari, Delenn, and G’Kar are kidnapped by the Homeguard. It goes according to no one's plans: Earth dithers, Ivanova stews, Kosh is his usual helpful self, Franklin makes assumptions, Sinclair tries to hold everything together, the three aides mount a cockamamie rescue, and Delenn hopes only to keep Londo and G’Kar from killing one another long enough for someone else to do it. A first season ambassadorial romp."
Funny, exciting and illuminating - great character voices and I'm very impressed by the way it captures a particular time in the show's story arc.
This time back to Merlin, and one day I'll make a post of my favourite fix-it, reincarnation/canon continuation stories, but this time I want to rec a story set after the end of Season 4.
The best-laid plans by Blackdisa "The best-laid plans of mercenaries and magicians...
In the aftermath of the rout at Ealdor, a mercenary leader tries to hold his small band of survivors together and extricate them from the mess he got them into. He thinks he’s come up with a simple plan to save them all, but things soon stop going according to the script. And then they meet with a group of knights, led by a knight who calls himself Sir Andrew of Dollop Head.
Arthur decides, for who-knows what reason, that he wants to spend his honeymoon chasing a gryphon all over Camelot. Merlin, as ever, is tagging along behind Arthur, but his usual plan of pretending to be a simple servant isn't working. Arthur has been behaving strangely ever since their return from Ealdor, and Merlin is worried. On the road, they meet with a small band of riders who insist that they are also Knights of Camelot, and Arthur comes up with a strange new plan all of his own..."
I don't read a lot of gen in Merlin fandom, but I adored this take on Merlin and Arthur's friendship, a love that's no less because it's in not in any way romantic. It also features some genuinely likeable OCs, an interesting adventure plot, the knights doing their thing and a magic reveal that really works for me, not too easy, but not forgetting their long friendship either.
I really wish this was what had happened at the beginning of season 5 - it leaves plenty of opportunity for further drama, while still giving Merlin the vindication a lot of us wished for.
Finally, another vid, made at a similar time to The best-laid plans is set, showcasing the action side of Merlin.
