Avengers Recs

I promised
pionie I'd make a post with some of my favourite Steve/Tony stories, but I've been meaning to rec one gen Avengers story for a long time and this seems like the perfect opportunity.
Five Authors who Didn't Write the Avengers by rhymer23
"Five authors rather unwisely allow various of the Avengers into their nicely ordered fictional universes. Mayhem ensues. Also heffalumps, mead, swooning, soliloquies, and some very grumpy wizards."
Even if you're not normally a fanfic reader you might well enjoy this one - when I linked to it on Twitter the guy from my favourite local ice-cream makers tweeted back to say how good it was. :-)
On to the Steve/Tony - and I've read so many good stories for this pairing over the past few months it's difficult to know where to start. Steve/Tony as a pairing started long before the Avengers film, and quite a number of the stories I've enjoyed have been based on the comics canon, or used elements from them. One trope that really works for me is based on the fact that it hasn't always been public knowledge that Tony Stark is Iron Man - stories involving what is often described as "identity porn", love triangles with only two people in them, coming to terms with not knowing someone as well as you think you do, and realising that someone is even more admirable than you knew. (No wonder I liked Merlin.)
Secrets of a Successful Marriage by valtyr
"Tony Stark lives a double life; he's secretly the supervillain known as Iron Man. But his loving husband Steve has a few secrets of his own, as Tony is about to discover."
This Tony genuinely is a super-villain, if not a particularly evil one, but that's all about to change...
Look here, look back, look ahead by marinarusalka
"September, 1941: Returning from a mission as Iron Man, Tony Stark crash-lands in the Carpathian Mountains and is rescued by Captain America. The two heroes team up to investigate Nazi activity at a mysterious castle. But Captain America is keeping secrets that could destroy their new partnership before it has a chance to begin."
Based on a comics-AU called Iron Man Noir - this time it's Steve who's not being entirely open about his identity.
I (created from fantasies) exist solely for you by Mizzy
"Six years ago, without the Avengers Initiative there to save the day, scientist Dr. Eric Selvig sacrificed himself to save the world, the almighty demi-god Thor was lost to a terrible storm, and vigilante Iron Man – spotted with a nuclear weapon trying to take advantage of the situation – was forever labelled an enemy of SHIELD.
This is a comic book office AU, where Steve is defrosted a year too late, Thor has forgotten who he is, and no one knows Tony is Iron Man.
Also includes: office pranks, inappropriate post-it notes, and superheroes who like pina coladas and getting caught in the rain."
Possible my favourite Steve/Tony story ever, with plenty of chance for the other characters to shine as well, and a brilliant comic office setting for Steve to show off his artistic talents.
Finally, I'm going to link to a story I haven't even read yet, so I can't guarantee it, but it's by copperbadge, who hasn't missed yet for me with his Avengers stories, and Tony Stark still with a secret identity. So I'm definitely looking forward to reading it.
The Most Amazing Things (Some Terrible Lie)
"Tony's decision not to reveal his identity as Iron Man to the world was shrewd and calculated. Too bad it's about to backfire on him like a Jericho missile."
I hope you enjoy these stories - do talk to me about them. :-)

Date: 2013-04-08 10:50 pm (UTC)The valtyr one was one of the first comics based stories I read, and it really sold me on the pairing. As for the comic office AU, I was reading it on my ebook reader, as I usually do with longer stories these days, and I couldn't wait to get back to it - just brilliant.

Date: 2013-04-11 07:42 pm (UTC)I've too many fandoms and not enough time at the moment, but there are a couple of fluffyish stories I've enjoyed fairly recently.
Momentary Paws (or, DO NOT WANT) - where Tony gets turned into a kitten (http://archiveofourown.org/works/465004/chapters/802777)
Heart Burn - "There was a dragon and now Tony's mostly naked and it's all Reed Richards' fault, but Steve thinks he can forgive him."

Date: 2013-04-14 11:25 am (UTC)I must admit to having a weakness for stories where one of my OTP turn into a cat, it's something about the way it allows for physical closeness and the breaking down of barriers between them. One of these days I must do a rec set.
