I was given buffy the vampire slayer; fanfic; steam trains
buffy the vampire slayer - a long-time fandom love, I watched it from it was first shown on British television. I was never part of the fandom, in the sense of talking to other people about it, but it was the first show I really read fanfic for.
fanfic - I'm a greedy reader, I have been since childhood, and finding a new source of stories about shows I already loved was such a great thing for me. (I'd been reading tie-ins since the original Star Trek ones became available in the 1980s, and I could buy them with the money from my paper round.) A couple of years ago I was introduced to the idea that fanfic is actually a genre, like romance or detective stories, and that makes a lot of sense to me - it just hits something in me that no other type of story does, even though I enjoy others as well. Unlike a lot of fanfic readers, I'm not a writer, it was always my least favourite thing to do, but that only makes me more grateful to the wonderful writers who've moved and entertained me over the past 20 years.
steam trains - I have fond childhood memories of my first heritage railway on the Isle of Wight and when I realised that there was one that actually reached my home town, I started really taking an interest. I found it was something I could share with my father, who grew up a train spotter in London in the 1940s, in the days when it was a "normal" hobby for boys, rather than the geeky image it later acquired. I like railways, and train travel in general, but there's just something special about steam locomotives, the history, the culture that grew up around them and even just the smell.
