An interesting short article on Tolkien fandom from yesterday's New York Times - Elvish Impersonators by Ethan Gilsdorf.

Not a costumed loonies article, regardless of the silly headline, and with a only slightly garbled mention of the Tolkien Weekend.

Isn't the writer the guy who came to the Chester AGM?

It is - it's great to get an overview of the different kinds of things that Tolkien fans do, rather than pigeonholing us. I wouldn't be surprised if new people make contact as a result, rather than thinking that Tolkien fandom is either far too highbrow, or too geeky for them.

That's partly why I'm willing to deal with him, he's pretty open and fair-minded for a journalist, and you know how he's likely to deal with stuff.
